About Us

We are located in the village of Carleton Forehoe which lies 2 miles North of Wymondham and 10 miles West of Norwich. We are a small scale operation producing up to 25 animals per year. The herd is raised in a stress free environment – they are left at grass for the majority of the year to mature naturally, which in turn produces the highest quality, full flavoured meat.

Red Polls originally grazed the meadows at Carleton Forehoe, Norfolk, from the 1850s. We started The Carleton Herd in 2006 as part of a river valley conservation scheme in conjunction with Natural England. The scheme encourages traditional management techniques, such as extensive grazing, of the river meadows of the Tiffey Valley. The cattle are an important link in the ecosystem chain and enable grassland to be managed for the benefit of wild life and the environment as a whole.

Our aim was to: re-introduce to the area an indigenous breed; produce top quality traditionally grass-fed beef through an extensive stock system; and to restore meadows to a traditional grazing pattern. The herd has now grown to in excess of 70 cows.
